10 tips to optimize your Facebook page

When is the last time you updated your Facebook business page?

When you create your Facebook business profile, it is important to complete and optimize your profile as much as you can. You want your visitors’ to understand what your business is all about in a matter of seconds. About 1% of your followers return to see your Facebook profile, so you really want to grab people’s attention right away. When you know the average attention span is about eight seconds, it means you better make a quick long lasting impression right away.

What exactly can you optimize? Let’s dive in.

1. COVER PHOTO

One of the first things, people see when visiting your Facebook profile both your profile picture and your cover photo. Facebook users will only see your cover photo when they visit your profile or in their newsfeed when you update your cover.

The cover photo is by far the largest piece of real estate you have on your profile. You want to make it count as much as you can. It is a great place to showcase your creativity, your portfolio or to design something that compliments the CTA button present just below the cover.

Make sure to follow the simple Facebook guideline. Here what you need to know.

  • All covers are public. It will be visible to anyone visiting your page.
  • Covers can’t be deceptive, misleading or infringe on anyone else’s copyright.
  • You may not encourage people to upload your banner to their personal timelines.

Over the years, Facebook has changed the business page design, dimensions and added a few more options along the way. We keep track of all the changes for you in our Facebook image size guide – 2018.

Nowadays, you have three different options for your cover. You can choose to have one image, a slideshow of five images or a video.

Cover Photo requirements:

  • Best result: 828 x 312 pixels
  • Min: 400 pixels wide and 150 pixels tall

Cover Slideshow requirements:

  • Best result: 828 x 312 pixels
  • Min: 400 pixels wide and 150 pixels tall
  • Select up to 5 photos.

Cover Video requirements:

  • Best results: 820 x 462 pixels
  • Min: 820 x 312 pixels & between 20 and 90 seconds.

Make sure to follow the requirements above of your image/video to avoid having a blurry or stretched image. Neither one of those undesired results is very appealing or compelling.

2. PROFILE PICTURE

Your profile picture is by far more the most important picture. Whereas visitors will only see your banner on their initial visit, or in their newsfeed. Your profile picture is displayed everywhere. It appears on your timeline, on every post you share, on every comment you write, in the Facebook search result, on other people timeline, and on Facebook messenger.

Profile Picture size: 170 x 170 pixels

Ideally, you should use your company logo if you have one.

3. COMPLETE YOUR “ABOUT” SECTION

Another important part to complete is the “About” section. This is where you have a chance to write about what is your business, who you work with, when and why your business was created, where you are located, store/office hours, who are the people behind your business.

All your basic business info should be present on your Facebook page. An incomplete about section could result in missed traffic and likes on your page.

This section can look different depending on the category you choose when you create a page. In case you don’t choose the right category, you will be able to change the category anytime you want after you created the page.

There a few things you should definitely do if you have a physical location. You need to provide your address, your contact information, your hours of business and your website. If you don’t have a physical location, don’t worry there is a place for you to write all your services.

4. ADD YOUR PRODUCTS OR SERVICES

Whether you sell physical products or offer services, Facebook gives you the option to display all you have to offer.

For services, you will need to provide a photo of 180 x 180 pixels (displayed at 160 x 160), the name of your service, a brief description, the duration of your service and the price (optional).

Just like for the services, your shop will need to provide a product name, a short description, a price, a checkout URL and a photo or video or your product. However, there is a guideline you must follow for your images before you can display your products in your shop.

You are required to use at least one image for each product. The image must be the product itself, no illustration or icon is permitted. The image must show the whole product and needs to be square with a resolution of 1024 x 1024 pixels or higher. The requirements don’t stop here, that’s why I am inviting you to read the Facebook guideline for shop images in its entirety by clicking on this link.

Nothing complicated, just a little long to go over all the details here.

You can list as many products as you want in the shop section however If your Page is located in the US, you can only display up to 1,000 products per collection, and only 10 products in the featured collection at a time. Unless you are a major brand, you won’t need to display more than a 1,000 products.

One of my favorite part about the products is the fact that once you have made all your products available on Facebook, you have the ability to tag your products in any image/video your post on your page.

5. DISPLAY YOUR SPECIAL PROMOTION

Increase your conversion with a time-sensitive promotion. Time-sensitive promotions are quite a famous marketing tactic. It creates a sense of urgency and motivates people to take advantage of the special offer.

Create a compelling offer for your Facebook followers and display it in your offers’ tab.

One of Facebook most recent addition to business pages is the offer tab. The offer tab is fairly simple to use. You’ll need a very short description for your promotion. No more than 50 characters long. You’ll need to set an expiration date, provide a picture and tell people where to redeem this coupon: in-store or online.

You also have two extra options, which are both optional. You can add a promo code and you can add the terms and conditions of your offers.

Even though it is an option, I highly recommend you to provide the terms and conditions of your offer.

This is the place where you add additional information, such as this promo code is only valid until DATE and cannot be used with another promo code. Terms and conditions are made to protect you, so make sure to provide one.

Not everyone is going to redeem your offer right away, and it’s ok. Many people will save your offer and return to it when they have time to shop. The greatest thing about this part is the fact that Facebook will notify these users before it expires.

6. UPCOMING EVENTS

Will you be participating in some upcoming events? Then make sure to add them on your Facebook event calendar.

Most people think of events as physically going to a place like a convention, a trade show, concert, etc… A Facebook event can be more than that. You can easily create virtual events. Amazon does it. Ever heard of Prime Day??? Prime day is a very important day for Amazon and they make sure everyone knows it.

You can use Facebook event when you launch a new product/service. A new menu item. Or you can even schedule all your Facebook live in advance. It’s a great way to let everyone know what your business schedule is and of course add all the other event you going to be attending.

7. FACEBOOK GROUP

Do you have a Facebook group?

You can now attach your Facebook group to your business page. Facebook group is a great place to chat and connect with your community. Since groups also tend to generate a lot of conversations, the Facebook algorithm promotes it in the newsfeed.

Since the last major Facebook algorithm update, conversations are promoted a lot more in the news feed than traditional page content which may have an external link. You see, Facebook want to keep people on their platform as long as possible, so people chatting up a storm will help both your group and your page to rank higher. If you don’t have a group, you may want to consider creating one.

8. CALL TO ACTION BUTTON

Make sure to configure the CTA button, located just underneath the cover photo.

Too many time, I see pages with an empty button. Even if you don’t know what to do with it, you can easily direct it to your contact page on your website.

This CTA button has improved drastically over the years. Nowadays, Facebook gives you a few options to consider when you configure it. Let’s discover what they are.

  • Make a booking with you:

Let users connect with you via chat regarding one of the services you offer. You must previously set up your service tab before configuring the CTA.

  • Contact you:

Let people know how to reach you, email, chat, phone, etc…

  • Learn about your business:

Attach a video you previously uploaded on Facebook or send people to an external link.

  • Show with you or make a donation:

Invite people to either shop directly on your Facebook page. Just like services, you must set it up beforehand or you can send them to your website. You can also direct people to the special promotion, you may be offering.

  • Download an app or play a game.

The last option speaks for itself. Invite people to download an app or play a game. Just add a link to the desired location.

As you can see, you have quite a lot of options. Make sure to pick the option that fits your business model best.

9. PIN A POST

Pin a post to the top of your feed.

When you pin a post, that post will appear at the very top of your feed, making it the very first post any of your page visitors will see.

Think of a pinned post as a roadmap. You can use it to give directions to the people visiting your page. You can introduce yourself to them, give them a few useful links or display important information. It’s up to you, what you decide to have on that pinned post but make it count.

To pin a post, you must first publish a post. One that post is published, just click the arrow in the upper right corner of your post and select pin to the top and voila. Remember only one post can be pinned at a time.

If you decide to change that pinned post, I suggest directly editing it, rather than un-pinning it. Especially if wish to keep some of the information. Otherwise, the post will go back to its original timeline, meaning if you published that post a year ago, you will have to back in time to retrieve it.

10. CREATE COMPANY MILESTONE TIMELINE

Every company has its own history. Facebook invites you to share your company’s history with your followers.

Very few pages use that feature. A milestone timeline is similar to a pinned post in a way. It helps you highlight important events in your business history, such as achievements, awards you have had, etc…

It’s a great branding tool you should take advantage of.

Creating a milestone is very simple. Go to your page, click the 3 dots button below your cover image, and click on create a milestone. Then simply follow the instructions to build your history.
