You would think creating your Instagram Bio is easy. Surprisingly it requires a little thinking if you want to optimize the limited space you have.
How to create an engaging Instagram Bio
There are quite a few things to consider in order to convey a meaningful message to your potential followers. Your Instagram Bio is the backbone of your Instagram presence. That’s why it needs to truly represent who you are, explain what you do as a business and where people can find you in a matter of seconds. You only have 150 characters to convince your profile viewers to become your followers before their attention span moves elsewhere, so you need to make each character count.
Let’s take a look at how to create a strong and engaging Instagram Bio.
1. Who are you?
First things first, who are you?
Choosing the right username is important but you can’t always pick the one you want. That’s why each Instagram Bio includes a name section. Your name appears at the very top of your bio, therefore you should be using your brand’s name if you aren’t already doing so.
Now in some cases, you will be lucky and be able to use the perfect brand name as your username. In this case, I highly recommend you, to write the name of the person managing the Instagram account, so people know who they are talking to. It helps break the barrier and also helps your followers to connect on a more personal level.
2. What do you do and why should we follow you?
The first thing you need to write after your name is your profession. What do you do for a living? What does your brand do? Followed by a short description as to why people should follow your account.
Since space is limited, using well chosen-keywords related to what you do and what you post is a quick and easy way to persuade your visitors to connect with you. Don’t go crazy either with keywords, thinking it’s going to help your Instagram SEO efforts. It won’t. Instagram only indexes your username and name.
Pick the keywords that make sense for you. Do the proper research and use terms related to your industry, to your strategy and ultimately use terms with which you want to be associated with.
3. Where are you located?
Where in the world are you?
Chances are, you are trying to attract a local audience. Make sure to add your location, especially if you have a physical store. You can even go, one step further and add your business hours. People near you, are looking at businesses like yours. Help them, find you.
4. Create a strong call to action.
The famous call to action. A necessary evil.
You can only place one link in your Instagram Bio, therefore you also have to make it count. Your CTA is directly related to your link, so ask yourselves what do you want your CTA to achieve? Do you want people to register to your program? Do you want them to download your ebook? Register on your platform? Etc…
Remember, a good CTA will help direct people take the action you want them to, so keep it simple by explaining what they’ll receive for doing so.
5. Expand your link option.
As I mentioned above, you can only have one link in your Instagram Bio. However they are 3rd party tools you can use to expand the link choices, you offer your followers.
I use linktr.ee.
This tool allows you to add several links on a very simple landing page. The advantage of using such a tool is to avoid changing your link every other day. However, you should be using this tool only if you are updating your Instagram Bio link frequently.
If you have a clear objective and a clear CTA, don’t confuse your followers by giving them other options to click on. It will only lower your results.
Make sure to use this tool, if that makes sense for you.
6. Display your brand’s personality with Emojis
Say it with an emoji. 😃
Emojis are a great way to add a visual element to your Instagram Bio. They can help you draw attention to a specific point and to reinforce your communication. Not to mention they make your bio easier to read.
Everybody used to think emojis were only for kids. As a matter of fact, many articles out there discourage you to use emojis because they may not make sense for your brand and/or for your audience. Well, I disagree with these kinds of statements. Have you seen how big is the emoji library? They are so popular, every year, major brands add new emojis to their catalog.
If you look hard enough, you will find an emoji that make sense for you to use.
Emojis are a visual cue. They help reinforce your point while adding a little color to your communication. They make your text less boring and let you show off a little of your fun personality. Just use them in the right context.
Check out emojipedia.org It’s one of my favorite tool to find the perfect emoji.
7. Include Hashtags
Instagram is the place to use hashtags.
Let your followers know if you are using a specific hashtag in your Instagram Bio.
Branded hashtags are a great way to build a community with a common interest in your brand. It gives a chance for your followers to participate in the conversation and to generate content around your brand.
8. Use Custom Fonts
That’s right, you can use custom fonts on your Instagram Bio.
Surprisingly, not many people use this feature, but if you really want to stand out and be unique, a custom font should do it.
There are quite a few tools to help you to do this. You can either go to this website https://lingojam.com/FontsForInstagram or download a font app for Instagram on your phone.
They are very simple to use, just type your text and discover what your text looks like in many different fonts.
9. Organize your bio with line breaks
This is a big one.
Everyone wants to know how to use line breaks in the Instagram Bio.
It’s actually fairly simple but you have to do it outside the Instagram app. You need to prepare your text either in Word/Google Doc, Facebook Update, Note app or as a text message and create the line breaks there. Simply copy your text and paste it on Instagram.
Line breaks are a great way to display precise and concise information without the full clutter of a text paragraph. I highly recommend you to use this technique. There is a reason why the top Instagram influencers are all doing it. It simply improves the visual communication especially when it’s combined with emojis.
10. Center your Instagram Bio
What you can center your Instagram Bio???
Not many people know about this, but you can center your text in your Instagram Bio. Here is how to do it:
Step 1: Copy the spaces *⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀* between the two stars including the stars.
Step 2: Go to your Instagram Bio section.
Step 3: Paste the spaces that you copied and write your bio after the second star.
Step 4: Remove the stars and the stars only.
Step 5: Save your Bio.
Voila, my friend, you now have a centered bio.
