How to install your Facebook Pixel

While the Facebook Pixel may seem a little confusing at first, unlocking its power is definitely worth the struggle. You know what they say. Nothing worth having comes easy. Don’t worry though, this article will walk you through the entire process to demystify this subject.

In order to create and install your Facebook pixel, you need:

  • A website for your business
  • Access to your website code.
  • A Facebook Business Manager account (Not mandatory but highly recommended.)
  • A Google Tag Manager Account (Not mandatory but highly recommended.)

The Facebook Business manager is free to create and offers a ton of advantages. You will gain access to a wide array of advertising tools, keep full control over the pixel and other assets included in the Business Manager. You can grant different permission levels based on business objectives and much more. Do yourself a favor and create your own account. In my next article, I will cover how to create a business manager account.

I know the sound of updating the website code can sound a little intimidating for some but rest assured you don’t need any technical knowledge to do this. That’s why in this article, we cover how to install codes with Google Tag Manager (GTM). If you don’t know what GTM is, it’s a free tool that allows you to manage all your marketing tags in one place. It lets you manage codes on your own without needing a web developer.

With that said, let’s explore how to create your Facebook Pixel and how to install it.

1. Create a Facebook pixel

Create your Pixel in 3 easy steps:

  1. Go to your Pixel tab in your event manager. 

2. Click create Pixel.

3. Name your Pixel

Voila 😄, you created your Facebook Pixel in less than a minute.

2. Set Up your Pixel

Creating the Pixel was fast and easy. Now it’s time to install it on your website.

There are three ways to install your Pixel. As we mentioned at the beginning of the article, this article covers how to set up your Pixel using Google Tag Manager (GTM), so go ahead and select tag manager.

  1. Click use an integration or tag manager
  2. Click Google Tag Manager
  3. Follow the steps and connect your Google Tag Manager account.

Congrats 🎉 your Facebook PIxel is set up on your website.

Now it’s time to verify if it is working. As you can see in the last picture, Facebook recommends your to download the Chrome extension “Pixel Helper”. Go ahead and install this extension on your Google Chrome browser. Type in your website address and then click the Pixel helper extension. It will notify you immediately whether or not your Pixel is installed properly.

3. Track-specific actions on your website.

The Pixel has been created and installed, now it’s time to track specific actions aka events, your website visitors are taking. In order to do that, you’ll need to place additional pieces of code on your website.

  1. Click on View Set up Instructions.
  2. Click Set Up Pixel
  3. This time, click on Manually Install the Code Yourself
  4. Scroll down and click continue as this steps as already been completed.
  5. Select the event category you would like to track.

6. For each event category, you will have to select “Track Event on Page Load” or “Track Event on Inline Action.” Pick the option that best suits your needs

Track Event on Page Load: Choose this option if the action you care about can be tracked when someone lands on a certain page, like a confirmation page after completing a purchase.

Track Event on Inline Action: Choose this option if the action you want to track requires someone to click something (like an add to cart or purchase button).

7. Add event parameters. (optional)

For each specific event you want to track, you’ll have to copy the code and paste it into your Google Tag Manager.

8. Copy the event you want to track

9. Create a custom HTML tag in your GTM

10. Paste your copied event

11. Click Advanced settings

12. Select “Fire a Tag after

13. Select your Facebook Pixel as a cleanup tag

14. Click Triggering, add the page you want your event to trigger on.

The triggering page will vary depending on which event you want to track. If you aren’t sure which page to use, go back to the Pixel code install page. Under each event, there is a short explanation on where to paste the code

15. Save your work.

16. Repeat this process for all the events you want to track.

Here you go, you finished installing your Facebook Pixel and your event codes. Make sure to use the Pixel Helper extension to verify all your codes are working properly.
