Are you up to date with your Instagram image and video size❓
Uploading the right Instagram image and video size is a big deal. You don’t want your message to be cut off on each side of the image/video. You know what I’m talking about. I’m sure you have seen it on “others people” account. Don’t make the same mistake and use the appropriate image and dimensions for your business.
After many years of Instagram square images and videos, the platform has opened up to allow users to upload portrait and landscape images. While this isn’t exactly breaking news to the power users, it’s important for business owners to keep track of all the new formats you can use to grow your brand.
Instagram is a visual platform. It’s the place where you absolutely want to use the right image and video size. If you want to engage Instagram users, you need to maximize your visual potential. Let’s discover together, the current image and video sizes for:
- Instagram Profile
- Instagram Square
- Instagram Landscape
- Instagram Portrait
- Instagram Stories
1. Profile image size
Let’s start with the basic, your Instagram Profile image.
Your profile picture ideal size should be 180 x 180 px.
Instagram display your profile picture on the web in 180 x 180 px. It scales it down to 110 x 110 px for mobile view, and 40 x 40 px in the Instagram feed.
To ensure your profile picture isn’t stretched or pixelated, upload a 180 x 180 px picture. Feel free to use your Facebook profile picture as it also is a 180 x 180 px.
Instagram offers three different image orientations:
- Square
- Portrait (vertical)
- Landscape (horizontal)
While these 3 different orientations remove the restraints on the images you can post, you also need to understand how using each format will affect the look and feel of your Instagram feed.
2. Instagram Square Image and Video Size
The square image is the oldest format and hasn’t changed much since the beginning.
The ideal size for your Instagram square image or video is 1080 x 1080 px.
However, the maximum resolution you can upload is 2048 x 2048 px. Most people don’t need to use this resolution but If you are a photographer, I suspect you would want your photos to look as sharp as possible, so make sure you take advantage of this resolution.
No matter which resolution, you go for, your square photos appears as 612 x 612 px and 600 x 600 px for videos. Both Instagram image and video thumbnail appear as 161 x 161 px.
Note that square video ads are by far the most successful videos among all social networks.
3. Instagram Landscape image and video size
The ideal landscape image size is 1080 x 607 px
You can upload higher resolution images but Instagram displays all landscape images at 600 x 337 px.
The ideal size for your Landscape video is 600 x 315 px.
Same thing here, as long as you keep the same aspect ratio of 1.91:1, you landscape video will look like a standard movie in 16:9.
Your video format must either be an MP4 or MOV and your video shouldn’t exceed:
- 4GB file size
- 60 seconds
- 30 Frame per Second.
4. Instagram Portrait image and video size
The ideal portrait image size is 1080 x 1350 px.
However, Instagram displays portrait images as 480 x 600 px.
As far as Portrait video, the ideal size is 480 x 600 px.
For some mysterious reason, the portrait video exact size is 480 x 599.484 px, so rounding up this number make it easier to mock up. Regardless of the exact size, not many people create a portrait style movie. Portrait videos are better used for Instagram Stories…

5. Instagram Story image and video size
The ideal Instagram Story size is 1080 x 1920 px. Aspect ratio 9:16.
